The Insular Cases were several cases taken to the U.S. Supreme Court concerning the status of territories acquired by the United States in the Spanish-American War. ~ The "insular" named comes from the fact that the territories are islands and were administered by the War Department's Bureau of Insular Affairs. ~ The cases were a response to major issues of the 1900 presidential election and the American Anti-Imperialist League. ~ It was determined that full constitutional rights did not automatically extend to all areas under American control. |
