- Lyndon B. Johnson took over as President after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
- He is the only of four people who served in all four elected federal offices. Representative, Senator, Vice President and President.
- President Johnson was supported for designing the "Great Society".
- The "Great Society" included legislation which upheld civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare and Medicaid, environmental protection, educational aid. It also addressed the "War on Poverty".
- The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 reformed the country's immigration system during the time.
- LBJ increased American involvement in the Vietnam War.
- Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in 1964, which gave Johnson power to use military force to any degree.
- As antiwar movements increased, President Johnson's popularity declined.
