- Radical Republican
- He joined the efforts to eliminate Confederate nationalism and slavery
- Grant fought for civil rights and against the Ku Klux Klan violence
- He encouraged the passing of the 15th Amendment
- Seen as a "symbol of Union victory" during the Civil War
- As President, he brought part of his Army staff into the White House, due to the fact he ran the government much like he did the Army.
- President Grant wanted to increase American influence and trade while keeping peace with the rest of the world.
- The Panic of 1873 occurred during his second term in office.
- During that time, the Democrats took over the House of Representatives and undid many of President Grant's reconstruction policies.
