- Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, and is the only President to receive it after leaving office.
- President Carter served as a Navy officer as well as a peanut farmer. He was once the Governor of Georgia.
- He created two new departments, the Department of Energy & the Department of Education.
- Carter established a national energy policy.
- He pursued the Camp David Accords, Panama Canal Treaties and second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT II).
- Carter returned the Panama Canal to Panama as well.
- The end of his term was marked by the Iran hostage crisis, 1979 energy crisis, Three Mile Island accident, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics and 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens.
- After he served his term as President, Carter and his wife founded the Carter Center, a non-profit organization to focus on human rights.
